cats
Totally Blonde!!! asked:

I really want to adopt a cat. I’ve wanted one ever since I was a little girl. My mom wants one too, but she doesn’t know how we could take care of it. I would pay for most of the expenses. Would it be better to foster a couple of cats to see if I was able to take care of it? Should I get a cat or kitten? I am in middle school, so I know how to do stuff. I am not a stupid little kid.

You have already asked this question.

People who have little experience with cats are not likely candidates for foster homes.

Try volunteering at your local shelter and you’ll quickly gain experience.

If you are not ready financially, please wait and save until you are ready.

    good luck!

There are tons of cats who need foster homes. Start by contacting your local animal shelter or humane society. Fostering a cat(s) is a great way to test drive one to see if you are ready for the responsibility. All cats that come from these places are typically current on vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered, so barring any illnesses, the cat wouldn’t really need anything other than food, water and LOVE till his vaccines come due in a year. Best of luck to you!

i would think its best to get a kitten, so it can grow up with you. it really is not hard to take care of a cat, they dont require a whole lot of work. kittens have a lot of energy and like to play a lot, so be prepared!

cats aren’t that complicated. I have had more then a hundred kitties through out my life and I am telling you from experience they aren’t. go buy you a cheap little litter box, some litter, two bowls for food/water, and food (normal if its a cat you get, kitten chow for babies) go down to your local shelter and get a cat. there are always cats there that are grown and sweet and beautiful and really need homes. but there are also kittens of all ages. they will normally give it its shots and fix it there and then bring your kitty home. after you have its things set up. take it and put it in the litter box and gently make it scratch the litter, just move its paws in a digging motion so he knows what its for. show him his food and enjoy. they will pretty much care for themselves. don’t give it to many treats and if its a baby watch its food intake, they don’t know when to stop eating when they are that small. good luck

Go to a local animal shelter to volunteer and get some experience.I would not recommend fostering a lot of cats if you don’t really know how to take care of one.Not to be mean or anything.Anyway I would get a cat not a kitten because all kittens WILL be adopted.Full grown cats and dogs won’t most of the time.

First of all, you’ve got to make sure you can afford one. There are many, many fees. There is the vet visits, cat food, litter, litterbox, toys, bed, etc. You should get a kitten. When you introduce adult cats to your home, they can sometimes be aggressive. I personally think it is better to get a kitten so it can grow up in the same place all its life and be more comfortable around you. You also have to realize that you may want to neuter or spay them, because they will spray stuff around your house. I would suggest getting a cat manual. They are pretty easy to house train. To litterbox train them: When you notice they are about to go to the bathroom, rush them to the litterbox, let them go, and then take their paw and drag it in the litter so they know to bury it. Repeat this until they do it on their own. Cats are really good pets. They are lovable and affectionate. You’ve got to be careful though. Don’t let them drink out of the toilet, and there are also many plants that may be poisonous to them. Also, try not to switch foods to often or give them milk.

  • i need it bad:

although foster homes are needed it is hard to get attached to someone and then have them taken away and a kitten is great but cats dont get as lucky as kittens when it comes to being adopted because most ppl want a kitten so you should get a cat but no matter what you do it is a good think to take an animal and give it love and a great home

I’d jump in and go for it. It sounds like you have what it takes. I would say expensewise it’s about $40 a month to support a cat, not including vet stuff which isn’t too often. Cats are wonderful. I’d suggest getting 2 littermates (kittens). They are very social and like having a buddy when you aren’t at home. There are so many right now due to the bad economy that need homes. Go to the shelters and you will have a huge variety to choose from. They will usually be spayed and neutered already and have up to date vaccinations too. Just make sure they are raised with a litterbox so they are pottytrained when you get them. You will need to clean the box every 1-2 days.

    Good luck and enjoy!

  • im probably bored right now:

    well you need:
-litter box (clean every other day, i suggest one with a lid to prevent smell)
-cat food, wet or dry it doesnt matter. you decide, dont ask here cuz youre only gonna get what people use on their cats, not yours! (feed twice a day, in the morning and at night)
    -water and food bowl
-some toys, a laser pointer works really well. you may want to get a scratch post, or something that looks like a peice of cardboard with small lines through it, some have catnip in it.
-dont get a cat bed, they wont use it. theyll use the couch, your bed, or somewhere to lay in the sun
-an emergency vet in case of emergencies
-some cleaning stuff in case of a hair ball
-a brush to prevent hairballs (if theyre a longhair, every day. shorthair, every other day.)

when you adopt, pick one thats about a year old. they will still be playful, but will be litterbox trained, know how to eat, and will be a little independent. please alter the cat, and dont declaw! thats like cutting off the first joint of our fingers, so we can never grow nails! good luck with your kitty!
