~Sawyer asked:

I ruined an expensive comforter laundering it in an effort to remove the cat hair. I bought the cats a cat condo & they love it, but they still sleep on my bed. I want them to stop.
I know the obvious answer of keeping my bedroom door closed, but I’m looking for alternatives to this.

keep your door shut, you cant train a cat. We have a huge fat cat who gets hair all over our bed to, we keep our door shut, because he doesnt care what we say to him.

Well, if you don’t want to close the door, it will probably be a long and slow process. First, you need to figure out something nonviolent that your cats dislike. For example, it may be clapping your hands or squiring them with a water bottle. Second, you need to watch your cats very carefully every time you let them in the bedroom. At first, don’t let them in without your supervision. Whenever the cat gets on the bed, do the action it dislikes. Eventually, the cats should avoid your bed. This may take a long time, though. Then, you will be able to leave your door open. You will need to practice lying on the bed, too, when training the cats, because they will be likely to jump up on the bed at this time. Your cats probably just want to be near you, which is why they are wanting to be on the bed.

i bought a cat fleecy blanket which my cat is more than happy to sleep on when its on my bed, easy to take off and wash, other than that just dont allow them in the bedroom!

From my experience, cats go where they want to go when they want to go. Many cat owners have sleep deprivation due to cats jumping around their rooms all night.

I don’t know of any other way to break the habit than to keep your door closed and no longer allow them into that room. You’ll have to find some sort of protection for your door and the carpet around the door as they will most likely scratch to get in as they won’t understand why they’ve been suddenly banished.

You could try to find some product similar to the electric fences on a smaller scale or perhaps there is a sonic device.

These behaviors are best dealt with in kittenhood.

Hope this at least gives you some ideas.

Put an old sheet over your comforter. That will collect the hair and protect your bedding. MUCH easier than training them to not sleep on the bed. If you really want to go that route, I’d recommend using Sscat or a similar device. Correcting them when you see them on the bed only teaches them to stay off the bed when you are present. Sscat should eventually prevent them from getting on the bed at all.

If you’re not willing to shut your door (the only thing that stopped my cats from sleeping on my bed, and that was after 2 weeks of whining…) then you need to give them somewhere more comfortable to sleep so that they prefer it rather than your bed. We bought a ‘cat bag’ for each cat, it’s like a very warm, very fluffy ‘bag’ that they crawl into. It’s open at one end so they get in and out as they please. All 3 cats love them, and spend many an hour dozing away!

I have 3 cats and 1 dog. Since cats are so involved with themselves, I have a squirt bottle filled with water and all I do is squirt them and it helps them listen to you.

If you don’t want to shut your door or w.e. the reason is. lol =] You should put a old blanket on top of your bed. OR you should use a spray bottle with water in it. (( Spray the cats with it ONLY when they’re on your bed and a make a “sisst sisst” noise to shew them away. AND then after a while they’ll go away with just the noise. Because they’ll think that they’re gonna get sprayed.

    Hope this helps! =]
